Clinton Mississippi roofing has always been the home of the Watkins Construction and Roofing team. The historic town of Clinton, Mississippi offers more than what meets the eye. Located in Hinds County, Mississippi, Clinton has a history worth exploring. With just 25,216 people, this small town combines the comforts of suburbia with modern conveniences in an “Old World meets new town” way. Here’s why.
Clinton was founded in 1823 and was originally called Mount Salus. The city’s current major highways of Interstate 20, U.S. Route 80 and the Natchez Trace Parkway were forged from a centuries-old path built by local Native Americans, which subsequently became the city’s first road–the Natchez Trace. The city was even once occupied by both Confederate and Union forces during the Civil War. Clinton is also home to Mississippi College – one of the oldest colleges in Mississippi – and the Clinton-Vicksburg Railroad. It also housed the former headquarters of WorldCom, a company at the forefront of the 2002 financial scandal. Today, Verizon owns the building. The city also survived the damages of a dangerous tornado in 2011.
This historic city is ripe for adventure for the shopping aficionado and history buff alike. Antique shoppers and vintage lovers can purvey the streets of Clinton’s Old Towne Historic District for antiques and vintage items, such as period armoires or vintage jewelry. The Boulevard Business District also offers great finds.
While modern buildings and homes aren’t hard to find in Clinton, the city is also home to some historical sites worth seeing, including the Cedars (Cedar Grove), Tanglewood and the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Tanglewood also has a Greek Revival style and is one of the few antebellum homes in the county. The Cedars is a private home that was constructed in 1839 and sports a Greek revival architectural style that was typical of the homes built in Mississippi during the Civil War. It’s one of the oldest homes in city and county of Hinds. The Cemetery is the burial ground of 63 Confederate soldiers. The East Clinton Historic District is also dotted with late Victorian and American Movement-style homes worth viewing.
